When to replace

Obviously, a shower door with broken glass needs to be immediately replaced due to safety issues.  However, there are other problems for which replacement may be an easier solution than repair.  If the frame of a sliding door system is bent, it may not be worth repairing.   Hinges and handles are relatively inexpensive and can easily be replaced, but if much of the door frame is rusted, it may be more cost-effective to go ahead and install a new enclosure.

Design options

Fixtures.  The options for hinges are endless, and while the most popular handle is a pull-handle, knobs can also be used.  Towel bars are also commonly installed on shower doors.  Some homeowners may choose to use a towel bar as the shower door handle.  When selecting hinges, handles, and towel bars, homeowners should make sure to match them to existing bathroom fixtures.

Glass.  There are two main types of glass: clear and opaque.   Clear glass is typically difficult to clean and easily reveals streaks, spots, and other blemishes that materialize when a door is improperly cleaned.  Because opaque doors usually necessitate less upkeep, these glass doors are becoming more popular.  There are also more design options with opaque glass.  The surface can be frosted or etched to include different designs and patterns.

Mirrors

Working with mirrors is a significant undertaking because of the large, heavy pieces of glass involved.  An improperly hung mirror can be disastrous not only to the wall but also to the mirror.  Smaller and medium-sized mirrors can be hung on drywall with toggle bolts or molly screws.  If the mirror's light enough, simply using hanging wire or a J-hook might be enough.  Because of its size and possible strain on the wall, a large mirror or vanity should be mounted to the studs.  If improperly installed, heavy mirrors, such as vanities, can become unattached over time.  If a large pane of glass falls off the wall, it could create a dangerous mess.
