Frameless. Frameless enclosures eliminate the metal framework and use a heavier, more expensive grade of glass. Although frameless doors may seem like a safety risk, the thick, tempered glass is very durable and difficult to break. Frameless doors often come in a wider range of designs than framed doors. They can give the bathroom a larger, more open feeling and, with clear glass, can show off the design of the shower itself more effectively. Also, frameless doors are easier to clean, because there isn't a frame to collect dirt and grime.
Framed. Framed enclosures, which are made of aluminum, are lighter and more affordable than frameless doors. The glass is often sealed into the frame, and they are relatively water-tight. Also, they are typically less expensive due to the lighter grade of glass. Heavy glass is not required, because of the frame's support. If the shower stall doubles as a steam room, framed doors are required to ensure water vapor doesn't escape the enclosure.
The next consideration is how the door is mounted to the enclosure. Standard methods to attach the door include sliding doors, bi-fold doors, and swinging doors.
Sliding doors. These are most frequently installed over a bathtub, because of the length of the opening, and they are generally framed. They glide in a track at the top and the bottom of the door. While the sliding glass door surface is easy to clean and care for, the track is more difficult to clean. Another common problem occurs when the door becomes misaligned.
Bi-fold doors. These are a good choice for showers that have a narrow opening or when there isn't room in the bathroom for a large swinging door. A bi-fold door consists of two framed doors hinged to each other. One of the doors is also hinged to the wall, while the other slides freely in a track. When open, the doors fold together. Because of the track, the doors may bind and not move as smoothly over time.
Swinging doors. These doors can cover a large opening to a shower. They can fit in large, spacious bathrooms and add a touch of elegance. Care must be given that the door doesn't swing into sinks, doorknobs, or any other things that may get in the way. They may be hinge-mounted or pivoting and are secured with magnetic catches.
