Common roofing issues

Cleanup issues. Many residents reported roofers that left a great deal of debris, such as nails, in the yard after completing the job.  Typically, roofing companies put a dump truck or a dumpster in the driveway, in which they deposit debris.  When the work is complete, the roofing company should walk a large magnet on wheels around the yard to pick up any stray nails.  Many of the residents complaining about nails left behind did not even know such a magnet existed.

Toe boards. Toe boards are temporary wood strips the roofer stands upon while working on steep pitch roofs.  Toe boards are not needed on shallow pitch roofs.  Some less-professional roofers nail these boards through the face of the shingles, thus creating holes in them.  This practice weakens the roof and can create leak problems, either immediately or a few years down the road.  Unfortunately, when problems emerge, the roofer who caused them is often difficult to locate.  Good roofers have specially designed brackets that attach the toe boards under the shingles.  Since correctly attaching the toe boards takes more time and is therefore more expensive, less-reputable companies sometimes don't bother with the brackets, in order to underbid the competition.

Gambling with rain. Some jobs involve tearing off the old roof before installing the new roof.  If a heavy rain occurs while the house has no roof, severe damage can result.  While some roofers take chances by tearing off the entire roof at once, professional roofers either tear off and replace a section at a time or use large tarps to cover the work area.  Professional roofers do not take chances with rain.

Roof type.  Most roofs in the metro area are traditional composite shingle or textured shingle roofs.  However, other specialty roofs like slate, tile, cedar shake, and metal are also common.  If you have or want to have a specialty roof, your contractor should be experienced in that specialty.
