Ventilation. Attic ventilation is extremely important.  In the summer, attic temperatures rise dramatically.  Circulating air minimizes the temperature rise, lowering air conditioning requirements and associated electric bills.  In the winter, circulating air helps prevent mold and mildew growth by minimizing attic humidity.  The best ventilation systems are those systems which move the most air for the least cost.

The ridge-and-soffit vent system is one of the best systems available.  As does a chimney, this system employs the natural rise of hot air to generate air flow.  Cooler air enters the attic through the soffit vents in the eaves.  This air is heated in the attic, rises, and exits through the ridge vents at the highest point in the attic.

Ridge vents are preferred by most roofers and shingle manufacturers because they are more efficient and cost-effective than turbines, standard roof vents, and power exhaust fans.  Ridge vents are usually installed when a new roof is installed.  They consist of a premanufactured vinyl-dipped fiberglass mat that is installed on the ridge of the roof for the entire length of the house.  The ridge vent is capped with shingles to keep it watertight and usually has built-in screens to prevent small animals and insects from entering the attic.  Adequate soffit vents are required to make the ridge vents function effectively.  Because they will disrupt air flow, old roof vents, turbine vents, and gable end vents should be removed or blocked when a ridge vent is installed.
