How it works

There are two types of containment services: full-service and self-service.  The former option includes a complete packing and storage job.  Movers arrive with a container, pack the homeowner's belongings into the unit, and take the container back to a storage facility.  When it's time to unload, the company brings the unit to the desired location and unloads it.  In the self-service option, the company drops off a container and the homeowner loads it.  When it is full, the homeowner calls the company to pick up the container.  The company takes the container back to its warehouse for storage.  Later, when the homeowner is ready, the process is reversed.  In both self-service and full-service situations, the homeowner can place a personal lock on the container doors to prevent access during transit and storage.

Materials and design

Containers are manufactured using either wood or steel. Because the containers are typically outside for some period of time, they are designed to keep the rain out.

Benefits of portable storage containers

Compared with purchasing traditional storage services from a moving company, container storage limits both the cost and the opportunity for breakage.  With traditional storage, the company's employees move each item from the house into the truck.  Then they unload each item from the truck into the storage facility.  To take the goods out of storage, each item is moved from the storage facility onto the truck and then again from the truck into the new home.  Thus, each item is handled four times.  If containers are used, each item is only handled twice—once from the house to the container and then a second time from the container to the new house.  Cutting the number of times each piece is handled reduces the cost and the opportunity for damage and loss.

For do-it-yourself moves, containers reduce the moving day stress associated with packing and unpacking a rented truck.  A container can easily stay at the home for multiple days and be packed gradually.

Before any moving is done, always make sure the business carries both workers' compensation and liability insurance.  If the homeowner chooses to load the container and something breaks, the company isn't liable.  Home Reports identified a very good choice for either full-service or self-service portable storage containers.
