How it works

Collar.  Most systems operate by emitting a series of beeps or vibrations as a warning if the pet gets too close to the boundary.  If these beeps are ignored, the animal receives a correction akin to a static electricity shock. A variety of collars exists on the market—correction settings and signal range varies from company to company.  Collars are offered in a range of sizes and should fit snugly on the animal's neck to ensure that it can't be removed by accident.  While the battery life of the collars is not a concern, it should be monitored, because when the juice runs out, so does the capacity for containment.

Wire.  Buried underground around the perimeter of the containment area, the wire acts as a conduit for the transmission.  The wire still works if it isn't buried, but installing it underground helps protect it from lawnmowers, garden shears, etc.

Transmitter.  The transmitter functions by emitting a radio signal along the wire, and the receiver collar picks up the signal.  Some systems work in reverse, where a predetermined range is set from a wireless transmitter.  When the dog exits the zone, it receives a correction.
