Termites in Georgia
If you are new to Georgia, beware! In pest control lingo, Georgia's climate locates it squarely in the middle of the "Termite Belt." The Eastern Subterranean Termite, the most common termite in Georgia, lives in underground colonies located between 5 and 30 feet below the surface, near large food supplies. Worker termites continuously leave the colony to find food and bring it back to feed the colony. Since termites eat wood, unprotected homes are an attractive food source.
Traditional factors contributing to termite infestation
Wood-to-earth contact. Termites naturally take the easiest path possible to obtain a meal. Since termites live in the ground and eat wood, if the wood of a home is touching the ground, that home becomes an easy meal. Some residents unknowingly create an easy wood-to-ground path for termites.
Poor ventilation. Termites need moisture to survive. Damp, unventilated crawlspaces allow them to thrive.
Debris in crawlspace. Storing wood or other cellulose material on the ground in a crawlspace attracts termites. When termites are attracted to material stored in a crawlspace, they may discover an even larger food supply directly above the crawlspace.
Leaks, flooding, and standing water. Water in a crawlspace or in other areas near the home
(caused by poor gutters, poor landscaping, or inadequate waterproofing) encourages termites. (See the
gutter installers and
waterproofing sections for more information.)
