Pavers are brick-like pieces of concrete that are manufactured in a variety of colors and styles. Most often, pavers are installed as the surface of a patio, driveway, or walkway. While paver installations offer certain advantages over standard concrete, pavers are high-value products and are therefore more expensive.
To install the pavers, contractors will excavate the area and create a foundation of crushed stone. After the pavers have been laid and compacted in place, a final layer of sand is spread to fill the cracks between the pavers.
Applying a penetrating sealer to the pavers is an optional step. Since sealers must be periodically reapplied, some homeowners choose not to apply a sealer to avoid future maintenance. Other homeowners prefer not to because they would like their pavers to have a worn look. However, penetrating sealers help protect the pavers from stains, prevent water from entering the pavers, and also enrich the color.
