Moving tips - things to take in your car
Before the movers arrive, set aside the items you will take with you in your personal vehicle. Consider taking cherished or valuable items, medications, two or more days of clothing, favorite toys and blankets, and hazardous items.
Damage
Damage is inevitable. While some companies take the proper precautions to minimize damage and disruption and quickly resolve claims, others do not. Some amount of liability coverage, usually $0.60 per pound per item relocated, is included in the base price. That coverage pays only $30 for a 50-pound TV. Moving companies do sell additional liability coverage. However, since some homeowners' insurance policies cover goods in transit, check your policy before purchasing additional coverage.
Movers
Insist on a written estimate. Ask questions about the move, such as whether packing will be done the day of the move or earlier, and how many people will be on the crew.
Additionally, remember to start the process early. Some movers book one to two months in advance. As always, make sure that the company you hire has both workers' compensation and liability insurance.
The Home Reports research has identified some movers to avoid, but has also identified a few very good movers.
