Estimating moving jobs

Underestimating price is common in the moving industry.  Since regulations specify that moving companies are paid by the hour and not by the job, a moving company trying to beat its competition might intentionally underestimate the job.  The company with the lowest estimate ultimately may charge more than a competitor who accurately estimates your job.

Insist on a written estimate.  Oral estimates are notoriously inaccurate.  Many factors, such as hills, the number of stairs, the type of items to be moved, and low-hanging trees in the driveway, greatly influence the amount of time a move will take.

Additionally, some companies do a better job of packing and protecting your belongings than others.  The best companies are meticulous about damage prevention.  However, adequately protecting items takes time, and in the moving business, time is money.  One company's estimate might be lower simply because that company's practices are not thorough.
