Each year in Atlanta, masons build and repair a wide variety of stone and brick structures, including retaining walls, steps, stoops, patios, chimneys, mailboxes, and outside home walls. While the cost of building the same structure out of brick, stone, and mortar is generally more expensive than building out of wood, brick and stone have a distinctive, classic look, and if constructed correctly, are extremely durable.
Masons can construct or repair almost any type of brick and mortar structure. Most often, masons are enlisted to construct fixtures like brick mailboxes, brick patios, and brick fireplaces. Read here about the processes of masonry and how these common masonry projects are done.
Bricks and mortar are the main materials used by masons and are the traditional materials used for fireplaces. Brick color will vary with the raw materials and processes used to produce the brick; however, an experienced mason can very likely match the existing mortar’s color.
Masonry repairs, when in the hands of a skilled mason, can be done so that no traces of the problem are visible after the repair. However, for masonry cracks in particular, it may be necessary to find the source of the crack, and make sure the crack is not a symptom of a more serious problem, like foundation settling or a sagging angle iron. Normally, when brick walls are constructed, expansion joints are strategically cut to prevent the formation of cracks. Chimneys also may crack and require repair; be sure to hire a qualified contractor for this type of work.
