Countertops

Popular countertop materials include granite, marble, tile, and wood butcher block.  More contemporary materials include polished concrete and stainless steel.

Granite.  Granite countertops come in many grades, thicknesses, colors, and subsequently, many price ranges.  It is a popular option, since it combines practicality and durability with a stylish, attractive look.  Granite has natural inconsistencies, so make sure to personally pick out a slab to ensure that the end result is good.

Marble.  With its smooth surface, marble is perfect for baking and pastry-making.  However, because it is porous and not stain-resistant, marble requires vigilant sealing and upkeep.

Wood.  Wood countertops give a unique, attractive look to a kitchen, and built-in cutting boards are functional, too.  Wood, however, is highly susceptible to stains, burns, and bacteria.  More so than most other counter materials, wood countertops must be regularly treated with oil and cleaned with antibacterial cleanser.

Ceramic tile.  From a design perspective, ceramic tile is one of the most unique and versatile countertop options available.  Ceramic tile is heat resistant, scratch resistant, and stain-resistant.  However, keeping the grout free of debris build-up and stains requires frequent cleaning.

Flooring

When choosing flooring, it's important to consider how much daily use the kitchen will get.  There are many flooring options to fit one's taste and budget.

Tile.  Ceramic, terra cotta, and natural stone tiles are a popular option for kitchen floors.  Tile floors provide a room with a unique character, and tiles come in a limitless variety of colors, textures, and designs.  Though durable, tile can also be cold underfoot and unforgiving for dropped dishes.  As with countertops, floor tile itself is easy to maintain, but make sure a grout sealer is applied to keep stains from becoming a problem.

Hardwood.  Properly maintained hardwood floors can last for decades.  Wood floors are available in a variety of tones and finishes.  Style choices include: strip, which uses pieces of wood less than three inches wide; plank, which uses wider pieces of wood for a more traditional look; and parquet, which uses smaller pieces of wood to create a variety of designs.

Lighting

For both convenience and safety, adequate lighting is essential in any kitchen.  Dimmer lights can be adjusted to create atmosphere when the kitchen isn't in use.  Alternatively, multiple banks of lighting can be turned off and on in sections as needed.  Large windows will also help admit light during the daytime.
