Design options

Before enlisting a contractor, consider what the space will be used for.  Is it primarily a functional room, or will it be used to impress and entertain friends?  If the kitchen is too small to meet current needs, consider moving a wall and reclaiming space from a closet or little-used room, creating a combination kitchen/den space.  A new cooking island with bar stools along one side will invite the family into the room, so the cook won't be isolated.  Satisfy an avid baker with multiple ovens and new stone countertops.  Add a stylish new bar to reinvent the kitchen as an entertainment space.

Appliances

Appliances come in many different styles and grades to fit a wide range of needs.  A gourmet chef may require an extra large refrigerator for storage.  Two dishwashers might make party cleanup easy, and multiple ovens may be a necessity for a baker.  Make appliance selections early, so that any necessary plumbing, gas line, or electrical alterations can be made at a convenient time in the remodeling process.

Cabinets

Because of their large presence in a kitchen, cabinets can have the biggest visual impact on the room.  There are many options for updating the look of cabinetry to suit different budgets.

Custom.  Custom cabinets are built to fit the kitchen and are made of high-quality materials.  Custom cabinets frequently cost more because they require the attention and the talents of experienced craftsmen.

Stock.  Stock cabinets are pre-made and purchased off the shelf.  They are usually less expensive than custom-built ones, but since they come in standard shapes and sizes, they may limit the design of the kitchen.  Be sure to inspect stock cabinets for quality, as they come in a wide range of grades and materials.

Refacing.    At considerably less cost, time, and inconvenience, refacing makes the exterior of the cabinets look brand-new.  The structure and interiors of the cabinets will not change, and other kitchen remodeling plans will be limited by the current cabinet layout.
