Air infiltration control

Homes are not designed to be airtight.  However, some homes leak much more air than others.  Because hot air rises, it naturally creates vertical airflow.  Trouble spots on the ceiling and floor, such as gaps around ceiling light fixtures, create mini chimneys, allowing heated air to escape to the attic in winter or warm air to enter through the floor in summer.  Some insulation companies use caulk and weather stripping to limit the size and number of air infiltration spots.
