Making a buying decision

Home Reports is intended to be one of many tools homeowners should use when making a buying decision. In addition to extensive research, you should depend on your own good judgment. (See Home Reports disclaimer.)

Home Reports recommends that you:

  1. Contact multiple references. Be wary if you have trouble locating references, or if the company only provides a small number of references. Also, keep in mind that company-generated reference lists often include hand-selected happy customers. Even very poor-quality companies can have some satisfied customers.
  2. Learn about the company's reputation by talking with neighbors and friends.
  3. Research the company's license status with state and local agencies.
  4. Contact insuring companies to verify the current status of both a contractor's workers' compensation and liability insurance. Insurance policies can be cancelled. The fact that a company had insurance at the time we conducted our research does not ensure it will have insurance in the future. Click here for insurance information.
  5. Read the information in our Additional Consumer Tips section.
