Framed. With a single cabinet in a standard door/drawer configuration, a framed cabinet will have wood around the face. This frames the removable parts into the wood. If the door and drawer were removed, two holes would be left in the face. The frame provides more strength, eliminating the need for a top panel. Three door/drawer designs are available with framed cabinets: inset, lipped, and traditional overlay. Inset doors are flush with the cabinet box, and lipped doors have a groove cut out along the edge of the door so that half fits in the box and half sticks out. Overlay is the most common door type and functions like a lipped door without the groove. These boxes are more labor intensive than frameless, because the middle beam must be cut to fit the cabinet.
Frameless. Unlike a framed cabinet, when the door and drawer are removed from the frameless cabinet, the homeowner is left with an open box the size of the cabinet. There is no extra material on which to hang the cabinet door or insert the drawer. Because there is no frame upon which to secure the doors, they are mounted inside the cabinet on the side walls. The edges of doors and drawers meet each other so that they cover the entire cabinet when closed. The only door/drawer design available with frameless cabinets is the full overlay, with the door and drawer completely covering the face of the cabinet. A frameless cabinet is simpler to construct and often less expensive than the other option.
