Manufacturing methods

Custom.  These cabinets are constructed to fit existing dimensions.  Because of this, there is a relatively long waiting period while the cabinets are manufactured; however, the options for custom-built cabinets are virtually limitless.  Because they are made after consulting with the homeowner, custom cabinets can include special shelf sizes and types, glass doors, interior lighting, or just about any unique design specifications.  Many homeowners find that the durability and quality of custom cabinets are better than most stock offerings.

Stock.  Manufactured in standard sizes, stock cabinets are put into kitchens as is, and to make these cabinets fit in the available space sometimes requires spacers.  A trained eye can recognize the difference between stock and custom cabinets, because spacers are used in order to fit stock boxes in spaces that are too large.  Choices of designs and materials will be limited compared to the endless range of possibilities that custom cabinets provide.  Common deficiencies in lower-quality stock cabinets include sub-par materials, poorly photographed wood-grain effects, thin laminate, and mismatched woods.

Materials

Solid wood.  Wood is consistently the most popular and desirable material for cabinets.  Common woods for cabinets in Georgia include maple, alder, and poplar; the most expensive are cherry, mahogany, and alder.  Each is desirable for its different tones and grains, but many species of wood can be dyed or stained to look like a more expensive material. Remember that the same type of wood is available in varying grades, a measure of the knots and other imperfections in the material.  Lesser grade means lower quality and lower price.

Veneer.   A popular alternative to solid wood, wood veneers are thin sheets of wood glued onto a plywood or particleboard base. They are less expensive than solid wood but can cover the outside of the cabinet with a hardwood look.  Veneer can be finished or painted.

Laminate and RTF.  Laminates are less expensive than real wood and wood veneers and are easy to clean and maintain.  Rigid Thermo Foil is a lamination technique that uses heat and pressure to bond PVC film to a fiberboard base.
