Designing options

When remodeling a basement, it is important to have an idea of what is required.  Knowing and planning for this in advance will avoid costly delays later on.  A knowledgeable contractor will be able to provide guidance for any blueprint; some typical designs are as follows:

Living space.  Add a bedroom and a bathroom to construct a space for guests.  A daylight basement will make a great apartment suite, either to rent or to accommodate an elderly parent or a live-in nanny.  A successful living space may require new plumbing or electrical work.

Entertain guests.  A basement can turn into a fun playroom for adults with a downstairs bar or a sophisticated lounge.  Game rooms might include a pool table or dart board.   A high-tech home theater, complete with banked seating, is a nice way to show off a big-screen television.  Any remodeling work should address new plumbing or electrical needs for a wet bar or home theater.

Kids only.  Give the kids their own space by turning the basement into a fun and safe playroom.  It's a great way to keep the toys out of their bedrooms and other living spaces.  A playroom is a fun place to go wild with design, such as adding a chalkboard wall or a painted checkerboard or hopscotch floor.  Give older kids their own television complete with comfortable seating to play video games.

For hobbyists.  Create a quiet, new retreat, complete with a workspace and added storage for materials, to enjoy sewing, crafts, or other hobbies.  Keep the noise of  machinery from buzzing through the house by putting a carpentry workshop in the basement.  Turn it into a personalized sanctuary with decor to match.

Work space.  The basement,  tucked away from the noise of the main floors, is a great place for a home office.  Extra walls can enclose the office completely, separating it from other basement foot traffic.

Storage space.  Whether overhauling the entire basement for storage or including it as a component of another room, storage doesn't have to be cluttered and ugly.  The basement can also be separated into finished and unfinished sections to differentiate storage and living spaces.
